Survival of the Fitless
A solo exhibition by Brighton-based painter Patrick Turner-Lee. This collection of paintings presents a series of portraits inspired by the artist's relationship with people and his heightened attention to their faces from lipreading. Each of Turner-Lee’s portraits represents the story of an individual, often incorporating self-portraiture to create mirrors of ourselves. Through his practice, he explores universal feelings and actions, inviting us to place ourselves within the work and contemplate the intricate nature of self-awareness. The individual qualities of each depicted character become their strengths and defining features, allowing audiences to construct their own narratives.
Patrick mixes his colours from raw pigments and works across several canvases simultaneously while the pigment remains fresh. As a result,the stories on each canvas are intertwined, creating a non-linear narrative where layering techniques, automatic drawing,and painting reinforce the evolving chronicles. Patrick often begins the painting process with two-handed drawing, opening up a conversation between himself and the work being formed. These processes reflect the fluidity of his creative practice and reinforce the interconnectedness of thestories embedded throughout his work. His techniques are influenced by both personal challenges and his desire to communicate beyond conventional boundaries.
Through his work, he creates dialogue and connection, breaking down verbal barriers and fostering understanding. Patrick seamlessly blends humour with deep emotion, transforming disabilities into tools of resilience and empowerment. His work not only reflects his own experiences but also contributes to a broader conversation about accessibility, neurodivergence, and the beauty of difference.
